If elected, what will your top three priorities be and why?

1) Increased access to affordable broadband internet access throughout the county. Although great strides have been made in the past few years, there are still many areas that are unserved or under served.

2) Increased transparency of county activities by harnessing and enhancing the existing county website to make information more easily available.

3) Improved relationships with the county labor force through acknowledgement and recognition of the value they provide to county residents.

What actions would you take, if any, to address affordability of housing in your county?

I look forward to working with the Housing & Redevelopment Authority of Koochiching County to first educate myself regarding the data they have collected. I am very aware of the current shortage of affordable housing in our community and that the needs extend beyond the HRA managed HUD Section 8 and Bridges Housing. I believe there may be potential solutions through MNHousing.gov but that idea requires more research.

How would you ensure election laws do not create barriers to Minnesotans’ freedom to vote while also ensuring safe and secure elections?

I am very familiar with the efforts made both at the local and state level to ensure safe and secure elections. As a county commissioner, I would ensure that the county remain an active participant in these state sponsored programs and advocate for their advancement. I would encourage the county to take a very strong stance against restricting the opportunity to vote via mail ballot since this is method has proven to be both secure and an effective means for voters to cast their ballots.

What do you see as the biggest challenges to mental health and social services in your county, and how would you address them?

Local access to support resources is the biggest challenge for those needing mental health services in Koochiching County. While the county’s Department of Health and Human Services works hard to meet the needs of our community, they must often work with remote providers. Improved access to telehealth services and looking for ways to attract additional providers to our local community are two potential avenues of addressing this challenge.

If there were to be budget cuts during your term, what are the most essential county services that you would advocate to preserve?

There are many services that are federal and state mandates which must be funded. Beyond those, I would advocate for services that provide benefit to the greatest number of Koochiching County citizens particularly those that impact their quality of life.

It's Time for Transparency in Government

I believe that elected officials are servants of the community that elected them. To that end, details of government activities should be readily available to community review and scrutiny. No one should ever feel that they do not have access to these activities unless data privacy protection is required by statute.
